Healthcare facilities

In Ukraine, professional help for the diagnosis of MS can be obtained in neurological and multidisciplinary centers that have experience working with demyelinating diseases of the nervous system. Below are approximate departments and types of doctors to whom it is advisable to contact.
Establishments
We have created a detailed selection of institutions that provide assistance to patients with multiple sclerosis by region of Ukraine, with active links indicating state and private institutions, contacts, addresses, schedules and availability. For convenience, navigation by region is provided - select a region in the list to go to the corresponding row of the table.

Doctors
Which branches should you look for?
-
Department of Neurology with the profile "demyelinating diseases of the nervous system", "MS".
-
Centers or departments offering comprehensive diagnostics: MRI of the brain and spinal cord, lumbar puncture (CSF), evoked potentials, immunological profile tests.
-
Inpatient neurological treatment department - as intensive therapy may be required in an exacerbation of MS.
-
Rehabilitation departments that support patients with functional impairments after nervous system injuries.
How to tell if a neurologist specializes in MS
To choose a doctor who has real experience with MS, look for the following signs:
-
If the profile or clinic website states that the doctor works with "multiple sclerosis," "demyelinating diseases," or "level 2 neurology" (specialized neurology), this is already the first sign.
-
Having work experience or practice in an MS center — for example, working in a department that accepts patients with MS (such as at Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 4).
-
Comprehensive diagnostics performed by a doctor (MRI of the brain/spinal cord + lumbar puncture + tests) is an important competency in MS.
-
Participation in scientific publications, conferences, or/and collaboration with clinical trials is a plus.
-
A multidisciplinary team with which the doctor works: neurologist + immunologist + rehabilitation specialist + neuropsychologist. Although this is less common, such a model is present in the MS center.
-
Question to the doctor: at the first consultation, you should ask the question: "What is your practice of working with patients with MS? How many such patients do you observe? What treatment methods do you use?" If the answer is detailed, that's good.
How to find doctors and clinics conducting clinical trials in Ukraine
Participating in a clinical trial may be an option if standard therapy does not provide the desired result or if you want to participate in new treatments.
Here's how to do it:
-
Check out the list of research being conducted in Ukraine.
For example, a pharmaceutical company/neurology website has a list of protocols for MS:
It lists the protocol codes (e.g. WA40404, GN41791) and the type of disease (e.g. primary-progressive or relapsing-remitting MS). -
Search for a participating research center/clinic
The publication states that such studies are being conducted in Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Dnipro, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhia, Lviv, Odessa, Poltava, Uzhhorod, Kharkiv, Cherkasy, etc. -
Contact the clinic or doctor to clarify participation
-
Ask: Does the clinic have MS clinical trial (CRT) status?
-
Is there a current patient recruitment, what are the inclusion/exclusion criteria?
-
What are the responsibilities, risks, free treatment/compensation?
-
-
Contact a neurologist who works at such a center.
If a doctor indicates that he/she is managing patients participating in research, this is a sign. -
Study the research conditions
Conditions of participation: whether discontinuation of previous medications is mandatory, whether observation is free, whether side effects are possible, or compensation. It is important to understand that participation in the study is a more active observation model
